William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, to a town councilor and a successful glover. Between 1585 and 1592, he became a successful actor and writer in London. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. His plays have been translated into every major modern language and are still studied and reinterpreted today. Some of his most famous works, such as "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Macbeth," and "Hamlet," are still performed around the world today. Shakespeare's body of work consists of 38 plays, two narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and various other poems. However, it is believed that no original manuscripts of Shakespeare's plays exist today. It is thanks to the actors of Shakespeare's company that we know approximately half of his plays. They collected and published them after Shakespeare's death, thus preserving the plays.
