Léopold Chauveau (1870-1940) was an unconventional figure who, very early on, plunged into a unique and original artistic world, alongside his activities as a physician bound by family obligations.
A sculptor, illustrator, and author of books for both adults and children, he was long forgotten in art history until his grandchildren donated his works to the Musée d'Orsay in 2017.
He began sculpting around 1905, and monsters quickly became the main motif of his work, both in sculpture and drawing. However, he was also an excellent illustrator and author of children's books. His hybrid creatures are often endearing, clumsy, and seem surprised by their own existence. Appearing as if from his unconscious, they are true companions, inhabitants of an imaginary world where Léopold Chauveau found solace.
This small graphic book features surprisingly amusing, interesting, and sometimes nightmarish monsters, depicted with simple yet lively lines.
