Marcel Proust (1871-1922) was a French novelist, critic, and essayist regarded as one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. Proust’s magnum opus, the seven-volume novel sequence In Search of Lost Time, based on Proust’s own life, is rendered psychologically and allegorically. Spanning 3,200 pages and featuring over 2,000 characters, the series is known for its length and theme of involuntary memory. The first volume was initially rejected by the publisher Gallimard on the advice of Gide, who later wrote to Proust to apologize for his involvement in the rejection, calling it one of the gravest mistakes of his life.
