Bookends: Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, and author who founded psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychological pathologies. Freud was a towering figure in 20th-century Western culture, helping to shape views on the mind and psychiatry by treating conflicts through dialogue between patient and clinician. While many of his theories were later abandoned or modified, his influence on modern thought and society remains unshakeable.
